October 08 | Rifle
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron rifle team got wins from freshman John Hupp on the smallbore and senior Jenna Compton on the air rifle as the Zips trounced visiting John Jay College on Saturday at Schrank Hall Rifle Range.
Akron dominated both events and won by a commanding 4600-4111. The Zips took the smallbore 2274-1949 and the air rifle 2326-2162.
"This is the first time we have been in the 4600's for multiple matches and it is our goal to continue onward and upward from here," coach Newt Engle said.
Hupp continued the excellent start to his collegiate career by taking the smallbore with a score of 575. Hupp took second in the smallbore in last weekend's Mid-Atlantic Open at Navy. Senior Zac Szabo and sophomore Victoria Brown tied for second in Saturday's smallbore action with dueling scores of 570.
On the air rifle range, Compton took top honors with an outstanding 588. Seniors Sarah Benjamin (584) and Ryan Stein (581) also topped the 580 plateau to take second and third. Both Compton and Stein fired perfect 100s on individual targets on the day to lead the way in the air rifle.
"I am extremely pleased with the way the team is coming together this early in the season," Engle said. "Once we build some additional consistency in our performance we will be able to move up from here."
The Zips head to Columbus next Saturday for a tri-match with defending Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference champs Ohio State and Columbus State (Ga.) The match begins at 11:00 a.m.
