Mattocks Wins Fifth MAC Player of the Week Award
October 26 | Men's Soccer
AKRON, Ohio – For the third straight week and fifth time overall, University of Akron sophomore Darren Mattocks has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced recently.
Mattocks, who was named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week Monday, padded his Hermann Trophy resume by recording his second hat trick of the season at Buffalo last weekend. The striker netted the equalizer twice and added an assist as the No. 7 Zips (11-2-2, 4-0 MAC) bounced back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits in the second half.
Mattocks, who has recorded 15 goals in 14 games this fall, entered the week as the third-most prolific scorer in the country, trailing Coastal Carolina's Ashton Bennett (16) and Cal St. Bakersfield's Gyasi Zardes (16) by just one goal.
It is the seventh time an Akron player has earned MAC Player of the Week honors in nine weeks overall. Dating back to last season, Mattocks now has found the net 33 times in 39 career matches.
Mattocks and the Zips will host Bowling Green tonight at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field at 7:30 p.m. to open a three-game homestand; it's last of the regular season.
