Men's Track Downs Temple; Women Second to Cincinnati in Tri

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2011 indoor season Friday evening at Stile Athletics Field House. The men's team defeated Temple 95-48, while the women's team placed second in tri-meet action to Cincinnati. The women totaled 109 points to the Bearcats 112 Temple collected 67 points to finish third.
Collister Fahie was double winner in the men's meet, taking first in both the long jump and the 60-meter dash. Fahie won the long jump with a mark of 24-06.50 and clocked in at 6.84 in the 60-meter dash. Akron claimed second in both events as well, with Daryl Baptist taking second in the long jump and Marcus Ferguson taking runner-up honors in the 60-meter dash. Fahie was also the runner-up in the triple jump.
Tyshaun Peoples was the winner of the men's 60-meter hurdles in a time of 7.97 and Willie Brown's time of 1:51.71 claimed first in the 800-meter run. Peoples would later claim the 200-meter dash as well, crossing the line in 22.16.
With a clearance of 7-0.25, Mike McCall was an easy winner in the high jump. McCall just missed on his third attempt at 7-0. Jakob Leon was second with a jump of 6-02.75.
Joe McCoy and Max Hiltner finished first and second in the mile run. Hiltner led the majority of the race before McCoy produced a strong finish to take the race in 4:15.24. Hiltner clocked in at 4:15.95.
Phil Ferguson and KC LaCross were the top finishers in the 400-meter dash. Ferguson's clocked in at 48.08 to win the event.
UA's Michael Uhle won the men's pole vault with a vault of 17-04.50. Daniel Garrett placed second with a mark of 16-04.75.
In the men's shot put, Nicholas Banke put of 57-10.25 earned him the victory, while Austin Levering was second.
In the women's meet, Brittany Cheese was the winner of the high jump clearing 5-07. Abigail Kuelling's jump of 5-05 earned her second in the event. Cheese also won the long jump with a leap of 18-07.75. Katharine Lee was second with a jump of 18-01.50
Kim Lorentz and Cassandra Schenck produced a one-two finished in the women's mile. Lorentz clocked in with a 5:01.85, while Schenck crossed in 5:05.45.
Latalia Jones won the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.54, and Katie Wise took the triple jump with a distance of 35-11.50.
Felicia Close and Cheese placed second and third in the 60-meter hurdles with respective times of 8.79 and 9.00.
Arian Beaumont-Courteau was second in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 12-07.50.
Both the men's and women's squads will be action next Friday evening as they host rival Kent State in dual meet action at 7:00 p.m. at Stile Field House.
