Lorentz, Brown Capture MAC Track Athlete of the Week Honors
January 19 | Track & Field
For the second straight week a pair of standouts from The
University of Akron men's and women's track and field team received
weekly honors from the Mid-American Conference. Sophomore Willie
Brown was named Men's Track Athlete of the Week while senior Kim Lorentz
garnered Women's Track Athlete of the Week recognition.
Brown broke the school record in the 800 meters to lead the men's
team to a victory over Kent State in dual meet action last Friday
night at Stile Athletics Field House. Brown posted a winning time
of 1:51.37 to top the previous record of 1:51.66 set by Joe
Mummert last February in the Zips' 82-69 victory. Brown's time
of 1:51.37 is the 12th-best mark in the nation entering the week.
Brown also ran the second leg of the Zips' 4x400 relay team, which
logged a winning time of 3:15.93.
Lorentz recorded a PR in the mile with a winning time of 4:56.90
then finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:17.09 as Zips'
women's team completed the sweep of the Golden Flashes with an
82-67 win.
After beginning the 2011 season at home the first two weeks, the
Zips will take to the road for the first time when they head to
Kent State for the All-Ohio meet next weekend. The two-day event
gets underway Friday night.
