Tennis Completes Day One at Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Junior Zara Harutyunyan paced The University of Akron tennis team on Friday in the first day of the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State, with a 2-0 record versus singles competition and 1-0 mark in doubles play. Being held at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts and Fee Tennis Courts, players combated high winds throughout the day.
Ranked 73rd nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason singles poll, Harutyunyan scored a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Ball State's Kylee Johnson and a 6-0, 6-1 win over IPFW's Amy Recht in flight A singles. She teamed with sophomore Angelina Jogasuria in the doubles bracket to top Ball State's Georgina Thomson and Dena Boulieris, 8-1.
Jogasuria posted a 1-1 record on the day in flight A singles, giving up a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 decision to Toledo's Polina Guimaroes in the opening round and then scored a 6-4, 6-3 win over Michigan State's Katarina Lingl in the second round.
"It was a tough first day of play," interim Akron head coach Andy Roland said. "Playing in 25-30 mph winds really made it difficult to play consistent tennis. Tomorrow is another day to continue to compete and get better."
The three-day, 13-team event continues on Saturday at 9 a.m. ET, with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.
