September 19 | Men's Golf
Cambridge, Md. - The University of Akron men's golf team held steady Sunday afternoon finishing sixth at the Maryland Intercollegiate. Carding a 287-291 to open play on Saturday, the Zips posted a 290 to round out their first tournament of the year.
"With tucked pins and very formed greens, we got off to a tough start this morning but I was extremely proud of the way we battled back," said head coach Nick Goetze. "After being +15 over at one point, the guys played tough and brought it back to 6-over. Although out finish was not as high as we would have liked, the will power shown today will be crucial for us throughout the season."
Sixth after day one, senior Lucas Murray moved up two spots to finish fourth in the 78-player field carding three rounds of 69-71-70 (210) on the par-71, 6,801 yard River Marsh Golf Club.
Junior Scott Landreth finished tied for 22nd overall posting a 218 (74-71-73) in the event. Close behind were true freshmen Drew Czuchry and Charlie Bull who shined in their first collegiate event. Czuchry posted a 220 (71-73-76) to tie for 27th while Bull grabbed a 223 (73-76-74) for a 35th place finish. Junior Ryan Mason rounded out the scorecard with a 231 (78-80-73).
Penn State took home the top honors in both the team and individual categories. As a squad the Nittany Lions carded an 844 (280-281-283) while PSU's Michael Miller won the individual group with a 207 (70-68-69).
The Zips will return to action next weekend (Sept. 24-26) at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate hosted at the Legends Golf Club in Franklin, Tenn.
