Des Moines, Iowa - Freshman Nick Banke set a new personal best in the discus competition at the Junior USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships being held at Drake Stadium.
Holding the highest mark on the year in the discus, Banke posted a 169-09 Thursday afternoon to finish 15th in the event. Banke's previous best mark of 164-06 came at the Mid-American Conference Championships (May 13-15).
Also competing in the junior portion of the event Thursday was freshman Brittany Cheese who finished 20th in the heptathlon. Participating in the 100m hurdles (15.06), high jump (5-04.25), shot put (37-03) and 200m (26.95) on Wednesday, Cheese finished the event with the long jump (5.44), javelin (86-10) and 800m (3:03.20).
Two Zips will see action in the senior competition on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with seniors Daniel Kinsey and Carrie Kayes, both coming off All-American finishes at the recent NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships (June 9-12), representing Akron.
On Friday, Kinsey will compete in the decathlon beginning with the 100m dash followed by the long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m. Saturday will open up with the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, hammer throw, javelin and 1500m run. Both days action will start at 10:30 a.m.
Kayes will be the lone Zips competitor at noon on Sunday in the pole vault to round out the event. Grabbing her third consecutive placement at nationals, Kayes finished seventh in the pole vault clearing 13-09.25 in one of the toughest fields at the meet.
Also competing in the event will be former Zip Stevi Large who will see action in the hammer throw at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday. Large is the 2009 NCAA Division I national champion in the hammer throw for Akron. Ranked third nationally by the USA Track and Field Association, Large won the hammer throw all four years throughout college.
