2009-10 Year in ROO-view: Women's Indoor Track & Field
June 17 | Track & Field
Throughout the month of June, GoZips.com will revisit the
2009-10 highlights of each of the University of Akron's 19 varsity
sports in a special series titled 2009-10 Year In ROO-view. Each
weekday, one shining moment per sport will be featured along with a
recap of that team's overall season. During the first week of July,
fans will have the opportunity to select their top-three favorites.
The latest installment looks at women's indoor track and
field...
AKRON, Ohio - The women's indoor track and
field program's highlight of the season came at the NCAA Indoor
Track & Field Championships when senior Carrie Kayes broke her
own school and Mid-American Conference record, clearing 14-3.25 in
the pole vault, to place fourth at the event.
Kayes, who placed sixth at the 2008-09 NCAA Outdoors for her first career All-American recognition, duplicated the honor in both NCAA indoors and outdoors this season. Kayes placed seventh at nationals in the outdoor competition this year.
"Carrie was unbelievable and so calm considering she was first up," said head coach Dennis Mitchell at the time of the event. "She was clean (making it on her first attempt) through her first five bars. This was the greatest pole vault competition in NCAA history in terms of the number of people clearing the number of bars that were cleared. It is a tremendous honor for Carrie to compete so well in such a talented field. I consider this the greatest pole vault performance in school history, men or women."
Kayes is one Akron's 19 All-Americans and fourth to do so in the pole vault, joining five-time All-American John Russell, three-time All-American Kira Sims and teammate Mike Uhle.
Kayes was one of 11 to clear the first four bars of 13-11.25, showcasing the depth and talent in the 2010 field. She went on to clear 14-1.25 on her first attempt, tying her previous UA and MAC record. While she missed on her first attempt at 14-3.25, Kayes made it on her second to secure fourth place.
Kayes, a three-time MAC pole vault champion, won the pole vault five times during the 2010 indoor season, including the MAC title.
The women's squad finished 39th in the national rankings.
