Bowling Green Downs Akron in Double Dip
May 09 | Baseball
The Akron Zips battled Bowling Green in both games of today's double dip but ultimately fell by scores of 10-3 and 6-4 at Warren E. Steller Field.
Akron (20-28, 3-18 MAC) was tied with the Falcons heading into the eighth but Bowling Green (24-19-1, 14-7 MAC) plated two runs and held on for the 6-4 win in game two.
Sophomore Scott Foster (2-5) worked well but suffered the loss in 7.2 innings after giving up six runs on nine scattered hits while striking out five batters. Patrick O'Brien (3-2) earned the win out of the Falcons' bullpen in 1.2 innings pitched.
Senior first baseman Kyle Hallett finished 3-for-4 with a walk while fellow senior John Turk also notched three hits to pace the Zips.
Game two began with a blast, much to Akron's dismay as a three-run Bowling Green home run started the contest in the home half of the first to put the Falcons ahead, 3-0.
Akron would begin chipping away at the Falcons' lead in the fourth when a two-out Brandon White RBI single scored Hallett who singled earlier in the frame.
In the sixth, Akron loaded the bases when BG starter Kevin Leady walked Jake Plata which Hallett and Turk followed up with singles. With one out, a sac-fly RBI to center from Samuel Trecaso drove in Plata and brought the Zips within one.
A lead off triple started the sixth for Bowling Green and the runner would score on an Akron error to make it a 4-2 ballgame in the Falcons' favor.
In the top of the seventh, Jared Turocy led the Zips off with a walk and hustled to third on brother Drew Turocy's double to right center. The younger Turocy would score on Plata's sacrifice-fly RBI while Drew scored on a balk to tie the game at 4-all.
Unfortunately for Akron, the Falcons jumped back ahead in the eighth on two outs, when a single, RBI double and RBI single plated two runs to make it 6-4 Bowling Green.
Game one painted a much different picture as the Falcons outhit Akron 15-8 and took advantage of four Akron errors to claim the 10-3 victory.
Bowling Green struck first, doing so with two away in the first
inning, utilizing a hit batsman, single and double to left center
to push a run across.
In the third, Akron retaliated on a solo shot off the bat of Ivory
Alexander who clubbed his second home run in the last three
games to bring things back to even but the home team would edge
ahead in the home half. A one-out fielding error was followed by a
single and a fielding error which put runners at the corners for
the Falcons before a single drove him in and put Bowling Green
ahead, 2-1.
Akron would score two runs in the fifth on Turk's RBI single and Trecaso's sacrifice-fly RBI to edge ahead by a run (3-2) but it would be all BG moving forward. The Falcons rattled off eight runs, scoring three in the fifth before putting up five in the seventh to take game one, 10-3.
Sophomore Alex Loftin (4-7) suffered the loss, in 6.1 innings he allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits while reliever Charles Wooten (2-2) earned the win for Bowling Green in five innings scattering two hits and striking out five.
Alexander led Akron in game one, going 2-for-4 with a home run and RBI while Hallett also finished with a pair of hits.
Akron travels to Pittsburgh on Tuesday (May 11) to take on Duquesne at 3 p.m. at Duquesne Field.
