Tennis Downs Bowling Green 4-1 in MAC Quarterfinals

KALAMAZOO, Mich.
- The second-seeded University of Akron tennis team defeated seventh-seeded Bowling Green 4-1 on Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-American Conference Championship, held outdoors at Sorensen Courts on the Western Michigan campus. The Zips (19-2) have positioned themselves in the event's semifinal round for the first time in program history and will face third-seeded Western Michigan (15-10) on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET for the right to compete in Sunday's title contest at noon.

Akron took the early advantage over Bowling Green (12-10) by claiming the doubles point, behind victories at the first and second positions, and won at the Nos. 1, 3 and 4 singles spots in straight sets.
MAC Player of the Year and All-MAC First-Team choice Zara Harutyunyan teamed with Anya Baronayte at the No. 2 doubles position and took an 8-1 match from Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel, and Zips Angelika Jogasuria, an All-MAC Second-Team selection, and Prang Pantusart took the doubles point with an 8-5 win at the No. 1 slot against Christine Chiricosta and Maddy Eccleston.
Harutyunyan clinched the deciding match point with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Chiricosta, after Angelika Jogasuria posted a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 3 against Babina and Pantusart notched a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Jessica Easdale. The Falcons scored their lone point at No. 6 singles, where BGSU's Katie Grubb topped Carolina Castro Cota 6-3, 6-0.
At the time the match was decided, UA's Angelina Jogasuria led 6-2, 6-5 at No. 2 singles over Kintzel and Baronayte was up 6-4, 5-2 at No. 5 singles versus Mandy Eccleston. Additionally, the Zips' duo of Jeremie Benjamin and Angelina Jogasuria held a 6-5 edge at No. 3 doubles against Easdale and Grubb when the early point was secured.
The tournament winner will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
