Men's Soccer Suffers First Defeat of Spring
April 18 | Men's Soccer
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Akron men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the spring season, falling 3-1 to Maryland in an exhibition match at Ludwig Field Sunday.
The Zips' lone goal against the Terrapins, who advanced to the
quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament last fall, came on a penalty
kick from Scott Caldwell in the second
half. The three-goal outburst by Maryland snapped a string of three
straight shutouts posted by UA and tripled the number of goals
allowed (1) through the first four matches of the spring
season.
"Maryland is a good team and deserved to win today," said UA head
coach Caleb Porter. "We were
outplayed and that hasn't happened in quite a while. Sometimes it's
necessary to get a dose of the hard reality. At this moment we
aren't as good as we need to be and it showed in the result.
"In saying that, it's the reason we want to play these type of
games in the spring. It's important to measure ourselves against
the top teams in the country in order to expose weaknesses and
correct them prior to the fall. We are still a young team that is
taking shape and our puzzle won't come together completely until we
have all the right pieces in place. I am confident the guys will
respond and perform better next weekend against IU."
Akron (3-1-1) will conclude its spring season against Indiana in
Cincinnati, Ohio, on Saturday, Apr. 24, starting at 8 p.m.
(EST).
