Sarkodie Claims Third MAC Scholar-Athlete Award
October 01 | Men's Soccer
For the third time in four weeks Kofi
Sarkodie has been named Mid-American Conference Male
Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced
Friday.
It is the fourth straight week a member of The University of Akron
men's soccer team has earned the award. Sarkodie, a first team
CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2009, was also named MAC Male
Scholar Athlete of the Week on Sept. 10 and 17 while teammate Chad
Barson claimed the award on Sept. 24.
Sarkodie, who owns a 3.969 cumulative GPA as a microbiology major,
helped lead the Zips to a 4-0 rout of No. 2 Tulsa last weekend.
The Huber Heights, Ohio, native scored the game-winning goal and
captained a defensive unit that matched an NCAA record by posting
its 11th consecutive shutout, dating back to last season. Sarkodie
played all 90 minutes against the Golden Hurricane, which entered
the contest as the top attacking team in the country.
The Zips (6-0-1) will jump back into MAC play Friday when Florida
Atlantic comes to town for a 5:30 p.m. kick off. It will be the
first game of a doubleheader with the women's team at the newly
renovated Lee Jackson Field. The women's team will host MAC foe
Ball State at 8 p.m.
