Loftin Named MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio – UA freshman Alex Loftin has earned the final Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week award as announced today by the league's office. The accolade marks the second time the freshman has received the award this season (4/27/09) and third time Akron's pitching staff has been awarded the prestige in 2009 as sophomore Benjamin Danziger picked up the achievement last week (5/11/09).

Loftin was outstanding in his start against MAC leading BGSU on Saturday, picking up the 17-4 win in eight strong innings on the hill. Loftin surrendered just three earned runs on six scattered hits while tallying a career-high seven strikeouts on the day to record the win. After allowing three runs in the first frame, Loftin held the Falcons scoreless across his next seven frames of work as the win allowed the Zips to remain in contention for a MAC Tournament berth.
