Tennis Closes Week One Of MAC Schedule With 1-1 Mark

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The University of Akron
tennis team opened the Mid-American Conference portion of its
schedule this weekend by posting a 1-1 record, topping Eastern
Michigan 4-3 on Saturday after losing 5-2 at Toledo on Friday. The
Zips improved their overall season mark to 12-4 and assured
themselves of a winning record for the first time since the 1995-96
squad finished 12-9.
On Saturday against Eastern Michigan (3-11, 0-2 MAC), UA claimed
the doubles point with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 and an 8-6 win at
No. 3, and went on to earn favorable straight-set decisions at Nos.
1, 2 and 6 singles to earn the match victory.
On Friday at Toledo (10-5, 1-0 MAC), the Zips also won the early
doubles point, but tallied just one point in the singles portion of
the competition. Freshman Zara
Harutyunyan provided UA's lone singles win, claiming a 6-1, 6-0
decision at the No. 1 position.
Akron continues league play on March 27 (Friday), with a home
match against Northern Illinois at 1 p.m. EDT at LaTuchie Tennis
Center in nearby Stow.
