November 11 | Men's Soccer
The final regular season release of the NCAA-generated Ratings
Percentage Index (RPI) ranked the University of Akron men's soccer
team No. 1 among the 204 Division I programs.
The RPI is rating is a mathematical formula designed to objectively
compare results and strength of schedule and is one of the key
indicators used by the NCAA in determining seeding and at-large
bids to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament features the top
48 teams in the country, with the top 16 teams receiving
first-round byes and culminates with the 2009 College Cup at
WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., on December 11 and 13.
The Zips recently completed their second perfect season in school
history with 18 wins in as many games. In doing so, UA is currently
riding the 11th longest winning streak in NCAA history. Navy owns
the record for most consecutive wins with 25, set in 1965.
Moreover, Akron, which for the past seven weeks has been the
consensus No. 1 team in the nation according to all five polls, is
the only team in the nation without a loss. The Zips feature the
top-attacking unit in the country with an average of 2.78 goals per
game while also leading all Division I programs with a shutout
percentage of 0.720 with 13 shutouts in 18 games.
UA will officially kick off the postseason this weekend when it
takes on Northern Illinois in the Mid-American Conference
Tournament at Lee Jackson Field. The Zips and Huskies will meet at
6 p.m. in a rematch of last year's conference finals. To purchase
