Akron, Ohio-The University of Akron swimming and diving head coach, Nittaya Klim, recently announced the signing of distance freestyle swimmer, Meghan Bowling, to the 2008-09 roster. Bowling will join five other swimmers and divers already inked for competition next season.
Bowling, hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, has been a star in the pool for her Anderson high school team leading them to Fort Ancient Valley Conference runner-up finishes her freshman, sophomore and junior years and a conference championship as a senior. With distance freestyle times already at the college level, Bowling will make an immediate impact in the pool for the Zips next season.
Voted first team all-conference three times, all-city once and
all-state as a senior, Bowling was also a YMCA national qualifier
three times in the distance freestyle events with her best finish
coming at the 2008 national YMCA meet where she finished in the
top-16 in the 500-yard (5:00.37) and 1,000-yard (10:24.1) freestyle
events.
"We are extremely excited to have Bowling join us next year," said Klim. "We are very fortunate to have someone of her caliber to add to our program, and she will immediately fill some holes in the distance events for us. In addition, she is an excellent student and brings many great qualities to our program as a person. I think she has a very promising future here at Akron, and I am looking forward to working with her in the fall."
Bowling will join divers Leeanna Hoover (Firestone high school)
and Aubrey Akromas (Solon high school) who were both outstanding in
post season competition this past year. Hoover won the Division I
State championship and recently qualified for the US Diving East
Championships in Rockville, MD while Akromas finished sixth in the
Division I State meet. Both will significantly improve the already
strong diving program.
