Tennis Drops MAC Opener 4-3 At Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. The University of Akron tennis team opened the Mid-American Conference portion of its schedule on Saturday with a 4-3 loss at Northern Illinois.
Akron (5-6, 0-1 MAC) won the doubles point for the second-straight match and eighth time in 10 outings. The Zips duo of Tanyaradzwa Gombera and Lindsey Berry scored an 8-6 win at No. 1, while the pair of Kerry Langworthy and Jeremie Benjamin played to a 9-8 victory at the No. 3 spot. Akron's Carolina Castro Cota and Alyssa Carlson suffered an 8-5 loss at the No. 2 position.
In singles competition, NIU (3-7, 1-1) won at the Nos. 1, 2, 5 and 6 spots to clinch the match win. Except for the No. 1 match, the Huskies won in straight sets. Gombera won her first set at No. 1, 6-4, but went on to drop the next two by identical 6-4 scores. Berry won 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 and Benjamin was victorious at No. 4, 6-3, 6-4.
Akron returns home to face Miami (Ohio) on Friday and Ball State
on Saturday. Both matches get underway at 1 p.m. EDT at LaTuchie
Tennis Center in nearby Stow, Ohio.
