UA Swimming Returns to Competition
November 14 | Women's Swimming & Diving
AKRON, Ohio The University of Akron
swimming and diving program returns to competition this weekend
with contests against Youngstown State and Oakland University. On
Friday, November 14th, the Zips will host the Penguins at 5 p.m. in
Ocasek Natatorium before visiting the Grizzlies in a 1 p.m. meet at
the OU Aquatic Center in Rochester, Mich. Saturday, November
15th.
The Zips will look for a repeat performance against Youngstown
State as they defeated the Penguins by a 170-119 margin, claiming
12 out of 16 events while avenging their one point loss to Oakland.
Last year the Grizzlies narrowly escaped Ocasek Natatorium with a
122-121 victory over the Zips.
As the young season progresses, Akron continues to find its stroke,
though the Zips appear to be heading in the right direction.
Currently, Akron holds five top times in the Mid-American
Conference. UA Junior Stephanie Zielinski holds the top time in
the 50-yard freestyle with 23.67 while senior Katie
Carter owns top marks in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter diving
events (284.77 and 301.65). Akron also holds the top times in the
200 and 800-yard freestyle relay events with times of 1:36.61 and
7:43.86.
Akron looks to rebound as they dropped a pair of road contests in
MAC competition last week. The Zips were marginally edged by Ball
State, 151-149. In Saturday's contest, Akron fell to the Eastern
Michigan, 172-122. Despite suffering losses, the Zips swam well
claiming 14 top-place finishes in individual competition while
adding a pair of first place relay finishes.
Junior Kendall Karchner swept the 100-yard and 200-yard
backstroke events in both meets while Carter added solid
performances notching three first place finishes from both the
1-Meter and 3-Meter boards. UA Freshmen Meghan
Bowling and Jessica Ickes picked up their first collegiate
victories with wins in the 1650-yard and 50-yard freestyle events
respectively (17:34.57, 25.05).
Following meets against Youngstown State and Oakland University
this weekend, the Zips are absent from competition until they host
the annual Zippy Invitational. The meet which plays host to 23 men
and women's swim teams is scheduled for December 5th-7th and will
be held in Ocasek Natatorium.
