Blue Scores Late Run For Win, Forces Game Four
October 09 | Baseball
AKRON, Ohio - In dramatic fashion, the Blue
squad scored a two out run in the bottom of the seventh to top the
Gold squad 4-3 in game three of the Fall World Series this
afternoon. The Gold squad mounted a two run comeback atop the
seventh inning but failed to make a critical out in the bottom half
to force extra innings. With the win, the Blue squad forces game
four of the series, which will be played at Lee Jackson Field
tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 10) at 2:30pm.
The Blue team jumped on the board first in the bottom of the
second. Brandon White earned himself a free bag courtesy
of a walk issued by freshman right-hander Andrew
Brown. Kurt Boyer drove a double down the left field line
advancing White to third before Lawrence
Penn hit a two out single to plated White. Brown retired the
side with a Matt Roberts strikeout.
Blue picked up right where their offense left off in the bottom
portion of the third inning by capitalizing on a Gold error. A hard
hit chopper at Nick Solitario was mishandled and Kyle
Hallett reached first on the error. Third basemen Ryan
Frazee belted a single to advance Hallett before White grounded
into a 1-5-3 double play. With two outs Kurt Boyer singled to left
field scoring Frazee for the second run of the game, increasing
their lead to 2-0.
Gold plated a run narrowing the lead 2-1 in the top half of the
fourth when Brian Kordal reached on an error committed by
Blue first basemen Hallett. He would later score on a ball that
skipped past veteran catcher Dan
Burant. In the bottom half of the sixth inning Matt
Roberts drilled a pitch over the left field wall to add an
insurance run, extending the Blue lead 3-1.
Atop the seventh, Ryne Romick took the mound in relief for Brian
Lavery. He walked Keene Marstrell before surrendering a run scoring
triple to Ivory Alexander. John Turk
hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Alexander, tying the game at 3-3.
Romick got Jacob Plata to pop out to left fielder White before
allowing a Kordal single. Phil Bednar lined out to Frazee ending the
inning.
In the bottom of the seventh White reached first on a dropped ball
strikeout. Chris Boyer doubled down the left side advancing White
to third. With no outs, right hander Robert Huffman got Burant to
pop out and caught Kevin Haas looking as the umpire called a third
strike. Penn hit a hard grounder to Jason
Corzine at third base, which he overthrew to first allowing
White to score on the play.
Ryne Romick earned the win for the Blue squad
while Huffman suffered the loss. Game four of the Fall World Series
will be held tomorrow at Lee Jackson Field at 2:30pm.
