Men's Soccer Ranked No. 2, Bush Earns Acclaim
October 28 | Men's Soccer
For the second time this season, the University of Akron men's
soccer team is ranked second in the nation, according to the latest
NSCAA/adidas poll released Tuesday.
The Zips (13-1-2), who had been ranked fifth last week, posted a
1-0 victory over then-ranked No. 21 Michigan last Wednesday before
shutting out Western Michigan, 2-0, Saturday on Senior Night. The
Wolverines, who are ranked No. 18 in the current poll, helped UA's
cause by defeating previously undefeated Northwestern, 3-1, last
weekend.
Akron, which has won 10 straight games and is undefeated in its
last 11, also regained the top spot in the regional rankings.
Following UA in the Great Lakes Region are Michigan (10-4-2),
Northwestern (11-1-2), Indiana (8-4-2) and Michigan State
(9-5-1).
Undefeated Wake Forest (15-0-1), the 2007 NCAA Tournament
champions, received all 23 first-place votes in the NSCAA/adidas
poll.
Bush Named to Soccer America's National Team of the
Week
Senior goal keeper Evan Bush, the reigning MAC Player of the Week,
was named to Soccer America's National Team of the Week
Tuesday.
Bush helped extend the Zips' shutout streak to five games by
shutting down one of the nation's top-rated offenses in Michigan
Wednesday. The native of Concord, Ohio recorded arguably his best
performance of the season with six saves - including a penalty-kick
rejection - against the Wolverines, the 11th-ranked offensive unit
in the nation, in a one-goal game.
He followed that up by posting his 11th shutout of the year on
Senior Night as UA claimed its fourth straight MAC regular-season
championship in a 2-0 decision over Western Michigan Saturday.
The Zips will take their win streak to Penn State Wednesday for a 7
p.m. start. UA trails the all-time series with the Nittany Lions
11-13-4.
