Tennis Falls To Xavier, 5-2

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron
women's tennis team opened their spring season with a 5-2 loss to
Xavier on Sunday at LaTuchie Tennis Center. The Zips (0-1) and
Musketeers (2-0) faced off for the first time in four seasons.
The match started out well for Akron as it improved to 6-0 in
doubles play on its home court over the past two seasons. The first
doubles team of freshman Carolina Castro Cota and senior co-captain
Amy Sherlock were dominant in posting an 8-2 win.
Xavier answered with a strong win at No. 2 doubles over freshman Jeremie
Benjamin and junior Lindsey Berry. Benjamin and Berry jumped
out to a one-break lead, 4-1, but from that point on it was all
Musketeers as they won seven-straight games to win 8-4. That left
UA juniors Tanyaradzwa Gombera and Alyssa
Carlson slugging it out at No. 3 doubles. The Zips pair jumped
out to an early one-break lead, 3-0, and held serve the entire
match to win 8-5.
In singles play, Sherlock extended the Zips lead in the match to
2-0 with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2. The match was very
closely contested across the remainder of the singles competition,
but Xavier was able to consistently pull out the close sets as they
won the first sets at No. 1 (7-5), No. 4 (7-6), No. 5 (7-5), and
No. 6 (6-4).
The only UA player able to win the first set was Castro Cota at No.
3 where she posted a 6-2 win. Xavier was even tougher with the lead
as it finished off No. 1, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 convincingly in
the second set. Castro Cota valiantly tried to get one more point
on the Akron side, but after falling behind 3-0 in the second set
and 5-1 in the third, rallied in both sets but eventually lost,
2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
Akron returns to action on Feb. 2 and Feb. 3 when it plays at
Oakland (Mich.) and at Detroit Mercy.
