Ampaipitakwong Named MAC Player of the Week

CLEVELAND University of Akron midfielder Anthony Ampaipitakwong (Carrollton, Texas (IMG [Fla.] Academy)was named Mid-American Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Ampaipitakwong's first collegiate goal provided the eventual gamewinner in Akron's 3-1 win over 10th-ranked New Mexico on Friday as part of the Westfield Insurance Cup at Lee Jackson Field on the UA campus. The freshman also notched three shots (one on goal) in UA's 1-0 victory over UAB on Sunday helping the Zips claim the Cup title for the second time in three seasons. He closed out the first weekend of his college career with one goal (two points) and four shots (two on goal).
He was also named the Westfield Insurance Cup offensive MVP and was awarded the event's sportsmanship award.
The Zips take their 2-0-0 record to Winston-Salem, N.C., this weekend to compete in the Wake Forest Tournament, where they will square off against nationally ranked Wake Forest and North Carolina on Friday and Sunday, respectively. UA's first five regular-season opponents competed in last year's NCAA tournament.
Akron's next home game comes on Sept. 13 against UIC at 7:30 p.m. EDT.
