The University of Akron Athletics
Davidson Named to ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team
June 20 | Baseball
Postseason honors continued to roll in for Akron catcher Kurt
Davidson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) Wednesday afternoon as the
junior was named to the American Baseball Coaches
Association/Rawlings All-Mideast Region Second Team. Davidson is
the first UA player to receive ABCA honors since Brian Petrucci in
1997 and just the third overall.
The third-year catcher and UA's all-time home runs leader was the
key cog in the Akron attack all season. Davidson, who led the Zips
in several offensive categories including homers (10) and runs
scored (40), hit safely in all but eight games in 2007 and reached
base in all but four. He was named to the Mid-American Conference
First Team in May.
In all, the North Canton native and two-time all-league selection
hit .325 (19th in the MAC) and was among the league leaders in hits
(1.36/game, 6th), home runs (.21/game, 2nd), doubles (.32/game,
4th), RBI (.94/game, t-4th), total bases (2.32/game, 4th) and
slugging percentage (.553/6th).
Davidson broke the school record with the 29th round-tripper of his
career against Ohio University on May 6th at Lee Jackson Field and
was recognized by Baseball America as the top catching prospect in
the league last January.
The 2007 Zips (23-24) enjoyed their best start to a season (9-1) in
10 years, posted nine-consecutive victories and finished with a
23-24 record, marking an eight-game improvement over the '06
campaign.
