Luke Getsy Signs With 49ers

AKRON – University of Akron quarterback Luke Getsy announced today he has signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers. In just two years with the Zips, the Munhall, Pa., native threw for 6,117 yards to rank third on the school's all-time list, leading Akron to its first Mid-American Conference championship and first Division I-A bowl game in 2005.
In that bowl game, the Motor City Bowl, Getsy threw for a school-record 455 yards versus Memphis, completing 34-of-59 passes with four touchdowns and no interceptions. The 59 attempts are a school record, while the 34 completions is second. Also in 2005, on Sept. 24 in a win over Northern Illinois, Getsy threw a school-record five touchdown passes. Including the accomplishments above, Getsy owns a total of 24 school records, adding completions in a season (278 in ‘05) and touchdowns in a season (23 in ‘05).
In addition to ranking third on the all-time passing yards list, Getsy ended his two-year stint at Akron third on the school's career total offense list (5,946), second on the career TDs thrown list (41), second on the career completions list (477), third on the career attempts list (905) and second on the career yards per game list (244.7). Also, his 3,455 passing yards in 2005 ranks second on the UA single-season list, while his 2,662 passing yards in 2006 ranks fourth.
For his career, Getsy, who spent his first two years at the University of Pittsburgh, owns three of the Akron's top six single-game passing efforts. In addition to his 455 yards versus Memphis, he threw for 413 yards versus Northern Illinois in the 2005 MAC title game and 406 yards versus NIU in his five-TD game earlier in the year.
Getsy, a two-time Academic All-MAC selection, led the conference in passing in 2006, averaging 221.8 yards per game, to earn honorable mention all-league honors. For the season, he passed for 2,665 yards, completing 199-of-380 passes (52.4 percent) for 18 touchdowns. Getsy not only led Akron to its first MAC title and I-A bowl game, but he also led the Zips to its first win over a BCS team, winning at North Carolina State on the game's final play. During the final eight minutes of the game, Getsy had 155 yards of total offense, directing two scoring drives. He was 4-of-6 passing for 126 yards and had three rushes for 29 yards, including a 10-yard scramble to set up the game-winning TD.
As a junior, Getsy ranked 15th nationally in completions (21.4 pg), 22nd (fourth in the MAC) in total offense (263.5 ypg) and 50th in points responsible for (11.1 pg). His 3,455 passing yards led the MAC, were eighth-most in Division I-A and rank 13th on the league's single-season chart. In his debut with the Zips, Getsy completed 25-of-44 passes for 283 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions at Purdue. Later, he led Akron to a 35-3 win over archrival Kent State. Although he completed just five passes on the cold and windy day, two went for touchdowns securing the Zips' MAC East Division title. In his 413-yard passing performance versus Northern Illinois in the MAC title game, Getsy hit Domenik Hixon on a 36-yard, game-winning TD with 10 seconds left to secure the come-from-behind triumph and clinch the Zips first-ever Division I-A bowl berth.
Getsy sat out the 2004 season with Akron, fulfilling NCAA transfer requirements. As a sophomore with the Panthers, Getsy appeared in six games, making one start. For the season, he completed 3-of-13 passes for 32 yards. At the season's end, he was named to Big East All-Academic Team. He did not see any game action as a freshman.
A product of Steel Valley High School, Getsy was named to the Associated Press Small School All-State first team, finishing his career with 6,021 passing yards and 59 TDs.
Getsy will have the opportunity to reunite with former UA assistant coach Mark Nori, who joined the 49ers staff this past February as an offensive line coach.
