Zips Drop Pair on Day Two Of Panera Bread Challenge
February 24 | Softball
The University of Akron softball team saw its record drop to 2-2
on the season with a pair of losses to Chattanooga and Eastern
Kentucky on day two of the Panera Bread Challenge.
Akron opened the day with a 3-2 loss to the host UT Chattanooga
Mocs at Frost Stadium. The Mocs were on the board first with a run
off starter
Julie Boyes (Uniontown,
Ohio/Lake) in the bottom of the first inning when a pair of errors
allowed Alyssa Edwards' single down the left field line to score
Jeannie Cochran.
The Zips tied things up a half inning later when
Cali Stratton (Liberty,
Mo./Liberty) reached on an error and advanced to second base.
Jaclyn Spirtos' (Medina,
Ohio/Highland) sacrifice bunt moved Stratton to third, and the
sophomore outfielder scored on
Katrina Moffett's (Chelsea,
Mich./Chelsea) fly ball to center field.
The Mocs game up with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the
third, scoring on Edwards' two-run shot off Boyes to left field.
Boyes went all six innings for the Zips, allowing three runs, two
earned, on four hits while striking out two and walking four.
Moffett was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate as the Zips held a 5-4
advantage in hits.
Deanna McCauley (Canton,
Ohio/GlenOak) also had a pair of hits for Akron.
In game two, freshman
Lindsay Bodeker
(Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West) got her first career start and went
6 1/3 innings but received no run support in a 3-0 loss to Eastern
Kentucky.
Despite allowing nine hits, Bodeker kept the Colonels scoreless
over the first five innings. EKU scored what would be the
game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning when Shyenne Hussey
led off with a home run to right field. They added a pair of
insurance runs in the top of the seventh on three hits. Boyes
closed out the game for Akron in the circle, striking out the two
batters she faced.
Stratton went 2-for-2 at the plate for Akron in the loss, while
Moffett and
Jennifer Stottlemyer
(Mesquite, Texas/Poteet) contributed one hit each.
The Zips conclude tournament play tomorrow with a single game
against Bowling Green. The nonconference matchup between the two
MAC schools is scheduled for 11 a.m.
