Wood Named MAC East Player of the Week
February 19 | Men's Basketball
CLEVELAND - University of Akron junior forward Jeremiah Wood (Akron, Ohio/Central-Hower HS) was named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
It is the third time a Zips cager has been given the award this
season and the second occasion for Wood in 2006-07 (Dru
Joyce on Dec. 26). Wood was previously honored
for the period ending Jan. 29, and today marks the third time in
his career he has earned the accolade.
Wood recorded back-to-back double-doubles, averaging 13.0 points and 10.5 rebounds while guiding the Zips to a pair of double-digit victories this past week. He also averaged 3.5 assists and shot 60 percent (12-of-20) from the field in those two contests.
In Saturday's 74-57 victory over Ohio Valley Conference regular-season champion Austin Peay, as part of the O'Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters event, he scored 14 points, grabbed 11 boards, had three assists and one blocked shot in 21 minutes as a member of the starting five. That effort helped to hand APSU just it's second loss in the last 17 games.
In Tuesday's 79-48 rout of Ohio, Wood tallied 12 points, 10
rebounds, four assists and two steals in 25 minutes as a
starter.
Wood sat out the previous season and a half to rehab a torn right anterior cruciate ligament, but leads the team and ranks sixth in the league in rebounding (7.5 rpg) this season. His 56.2 field-goal percentage is eight best amongst his conference peers.
Wood has recorded 10 career double-doubles, with four of those coming this season.
Akron, which leads the MAC's East Division, travels to Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Millett Hall.
