Akron?s Bradbrook Named Academic All-America

University of Akron senior Elliot Bradbrook was named second
team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America, as awarded by the
College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A native
of Kent, England, Bradbrook carries a 3.85 grade point average for
his career, majoring in history.
Bradbrook became eligible for the national honor after being a
first team Academic All-Region pick earlier in this season, along
with teammate Ossie Michalsen. Also, to be eligible, a
student-athlete must be at least a sophomore or, in the case of
transfers, been at the institution one full academic year, have at
least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a starter or valuable
contributor. Bradbrook is the 16th Akron student-athlete to earn
the prestigious Academic All-Ameirca award becoming the
fifth men's soccer play. His honor is additionally the 21st time an
Akron student-athlete has been named Academic All-America with
track's Lynn (Jutte) Brant being honored three times, track's Mary
Varga being honored three times and men's soccer Justin Millard
being honored twice.
Bradbrook has had an impressive senior season to date; helping the
Zips win the 2007 Mid-American Conference regular-season and
tournament championships as well as earning a 14th seed in the 2007
NCAA National Championship. He was also named first team All-MAC,
MAC Player of the Week and MAC Male Student-Athlete of the Week
this season.
From his midfielder/defender position, Bradbrook was key to both
the Zips' offensive and defensive efforts. Offensively, he ranked
second on the team with five goals and had two assists. He opened
the season scoring the team's first goal of the season in a 3-1
victory over #10 New Mexico. Later, he scored the game winner in a
win over #25 Illinois-Chicago. Akron ranked 28th in the NCAA in
scoring 1.8 goals per game.
On defense, the Zips ranked third in the nation in shutout
percentage (0.60) and eighth in goals against average, allowing
just 0.57 goals per match. Overall, Akron posted 12 shutouts,
including a span with six straight blankings. Akron out-scored its
league opponents 10-0 during the regular season and 29-4 over its
last 15 matches.
In the classroom, Bradbrook was a 2006-07 Akron Scholar-Baller and,
between his time at Ashland and Akron, has earned Dean's List
recognition five times.
Bradbrook and the Zips will return to action next Wednesday (Nov.
28) at 7:30 pm, hosting a second-round NCAA Tournament game at Lee
Jackson Field. Akron will face the winner of the Colgate at South
Florida match, which will be played this weekend.
