Men's Basketball Tallies Votes In AP Poll
November 02 | Men's Basketball
AKRON, Ohio For the second-consecutive season, the University of Akron men's basketball team was recognized in the "others receiving votes" category of the Associated Press preseason poll, released on Friday. The Zips tallied two votes in the poll, after earning one vote last season.
Akron, which was picked to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference East Division in a preseason media poll released last month, is the only MAC team to receive preseason attention in either of the national polls. Additionally, the Zips were the league's highest-rated team in last month's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Preseason Top 25, coming in at No. 14.
UA
finished last season with a
school-record 26-7 mark, won its first MAC East Division title
since 1998, and advanced to the conference tournament title game
for the first time in program history. The Zips return three
starters and 10 letterwinners from that team, including Preseason
All-MAC selection and league player-of-the-year candidate senior
forward Jeremiah Wood. Wood led the Zips in rebounding
(7.8 rpg) and ranked third in scoring (10.3 ppg) last season.
Akron plays host to Walsh University in an exhibition on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. EST at Rhodes Arena, and opens the regular season on Nov. 16 against South Carolina Upstate in the BP Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Zips' regular-season home-opener comes on Nov. 24 versus Binghamton at 7 p.m.
UA closing out last season with votes in the final AP and ESPN/USA Today Coaches rankings.
