October 07 | Men's Soccer
AKRON, Ohio The 24th-ranked University of Akron men's soccer team cruised to a 2-0 victory over Hartwick on Saturday night at Lee Jackson Field in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. The Zips improved to 8-2-1 (1-0-0 MAC) and tallied their third-straight shutout, and fifth in six games.
Steve Zakuani scored the eventual gamewinner in
the 40th minute. A serve from the right side by Steve
Kalan was flicked on by Stefan
Ostergren to Zakuani who knocked it just inside the left post
from the left side of the box. It was Zakuani's second goal of the
year as well as his second game-winning score of the campaign.
Kalan was credited with his third assist of the season, and
Ostergren with his first.
The Zips notched an insurance score in the 49th minute courtesy
of Pablo Moreira. Moreira's third score of the
season came after he controlled a pass to the right of the goal,
and turned and shot to the left post. Ossie
Michalsen earned the assist, having sent in the ball from
midfield. Moreira's attempt on an open net in the waning minutes of
the contest went high.
Akron dominated the offensive side of the stat sheet,
out-shooting Hartwick (3-4-2, 0-1-0) 22-3, including a 9-2
advantage in shots on goals and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.
UA goalkeeper Evan Bush picked up his eighth win of the season and has held the Zips' opponents scoreless for the last 590 minutes of play, dating to the first half of a home match against UIC on Sept. 13. Additionally, Bush recorded the 29th shutout of his collegiate career, and had a pair of saves against the Hawks.
Hartwick 'keeper Jeremy Vuolo had seven saves.
"This win says a lot about what our team is made of," Akron head
coach Caleb Porter said. "We will take a few days off
to recharge our batteries and then get back to business and our
next game."
Akron is idle for a week, returning to action on Oct. 13 against
MAC foe Northern Illinois at 7:30 p.m. EDT at Lee Jackson Field.
That game serves as a re-match of last season's MAC tournament
championship game, in which the Huskies topped the Zips 1-0.
