Baseball Names Team Captains for 2007-08
October 17 | Baseball
Senior Doug McNulty (Homer City, Pa./Homer-Center) and
juniors Brett Savage (Massillon, Ohio/Perry/Youngstown
St.) and Frank Turocy (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) have been
named team tri-captains for the University of Akron baseball team,
head coach Pat Bangtson announced Wednesday.
The three returnees enjoyed breakout seasons in 2007 and earned the
distinction as a result of a vote of their peers.
McNulty, a second-team All-Mid-American Conference selection last
spring, finished sixth in the league with a team-high .356 batting
average and reached career highs for triples (4), RBI (36), stolen
bases (11), on-base percentage (.401) and slugging percentage
(.539).
Savage solidified the leadoff position halfway through the season
and tied a tied a school record on two occasions with five hits in
games at Duquesne (Apr. 4) and against Youngstown State (May 15).
His .344 batting average was second highest on the team and 10th in
the league.
Turocy emerged as the team's Friday starter last year and will be
counted on to provide leadership to a relatively young staff. The
right-hander was twice named MAC Pitcher of the Week and threw the
team's only complete-game, nine-inning shutout against Northern
Illinois (Mar. 31).
The 2007-08 UA baseball team will open its season in late February
looking to build on the strides made last spring when the team made
an eight-game improvement in the win column.
