October 14 | Men's Soccer
AKRON, Ohio No. 22 Akron played Northern Illinois to a double-overtime scoreless tie in a Mid-American Conference men's soccer match on Saturday at Lee Jackson Field. The Zips moved their record to 8-2-2 (1-0-1 MAC) and tallied their fourth-straight shutout, and sixth in seven games.
UA goalkeeper Evan Bush has now held the Zips' opponents scoreless for the last 700 minutes of play, dating to the first half of a home match against UIC on Sept. 13. Additionally, Bush recorded the 30th shutout of his collegiate career, and had one save against Northern Illinois (4-5-4, 1-0-1).
Despite ending in a draw, Akron dominated the stat sheet. The
Zips out shot the Huskies 20-4, and held an 8-2 edge in shots on
goal. UA also took 11 corner kicks, compared to just two by NIU.
Leading the way for the Zips offensively was Blair
Gavin, with five shots (one on goal), and Steve
Zakuani , with four shots (two on goal). Two other UA players
were credited with two shots on goal, with Steve
Kalan and Pablo Moreira also doing so.
"It's hard to dominate like that and not get the winning result," Akron head coach Caleb Porter said. "However, I was pleased with our performance for the most part. We need to work on our finishing touch to goal, but we created plenty of chances."
Akron steps out of conference on Wednesday when it plays host to Big Ten foe Penn State at 7:30 p.m. EDT at Lee Jackson Field.
