January 09 | Men's Golf
- The second annual winter golf camp is slated for Monday, Jan.
15, in the University of Akron Athletics Field House.
The camp is available to high school golf programs and individuals
(ages 14-18) for the purpose of improving their golfing skill and
team performance. It will focus on overall performance in the areas
of full swing technique and all facets of the short game including,
pitching, chipping, bunker play and putting. In addition, the
importance of improving the mind and body will be covered with
special emphasis on golf performance psychology, strength and
flexibility training, and proper nutrition.
Zips head coach
Tom
Porten will serve as the camp director. Porten, in his first
year at Akron, recently guided the Zips to the best fall season in
school history with two tournament wins and four top-five finishes
in six events. His efforts helped four different UA golfers win
Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week accolades during the
fall season.
Longtime Hudson High School head coach, Rob Yanko will assist
Porten along with former Zips golfer and current graduate assistant
coach Sean Dove. Campers will also receive instruction from UA
strength and condition coach Tim Campbell.
Dr. Lonnie Lowery, Akron Athletics Staff Nutritionist, will be on
hand to provide campers with the insight on the importance of
proper dieting techniques, while Dr. Eric Hayden, a member of
Akron's sports psychology staff, will cover the mental aspects of
the game.
The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST at the Zips indoor golf
facility, located inside the Athletics Field House. The indoor golf
facility is one of the finest golf training facilities in the
country, featuring a contoured green, pitching/chipping area,
bunker and hitting stations with video analysis.
