Track and Field Ready For A Busy Weekend
January 17 | Track & Field
- Coming off an impressive showing at the Akron Quad meet last
weekend, the University of Akron track and field team will travel
to Ann Arbor, Michigan this weekend to take part in the Red
Simmons/Jack Harvey Invitational on the University of Michigan
campus.
While most of the Zips will be in Michigan, UA pole vaulters Carrie
Kayes (Akron, Ohio/Green HS),
Jessica Miller (Wooster,
Ohio/Wooster HS),
Crystal Goldsmith
(Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville HS),
Jenna Nance (Middletown,
Ohio/Madison HS),
Jennifer Peck (Maumee, Ohio
(Springfield HS/Bowling Green) and
Weston Lott (Berea,
Oho/Berea HS) will be competing at the 17th Annual USATF Pole Vault
Summit in Reno, Nev. The event will feature nearly 3,000
participants with 68 different pole vault competitions for college,
high school, master and elite pole vaulters.
The USATF Summit was rated as the greatest Olympics development
event by the USOC. Akron head coach
Dennis Mitchell will be on
hand serving as a Junior Elite Pole Vault Coach, and former UA star
and five-time All-America selection
John Russell will also be
competing in the event.
Both the men's and women's teams are coming of season-opening
victories last weekend, but will have to contend with Big Ten foes
Michigan and Michigan State starting on Friday afternoon at the Red
Simmons/Jack Harvey meet. Mid-American Conference opponents in
attendance include Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan.
Throwers
Stevi Large (Somerset,
Ohio/Sheridan HS) and
Randall Hafner (Willard,
Ohio/Willard HS) will be looking for repeat performances from last
week, as they both enter the meet as reigning MAC Field Athletes of
the Week.
All the action is slated to begin on Friday, Jan. 19, 2:30 p.m.
EST. Day-two of the meet is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start time.
