Zips Fall, 1-0 at Ohio State
September 26 | Men's Soccer
A goal in the 70th minute was all Ohio State needed as No. 16
Akron (6-3), fell 1-0 to Ohio State (4-5-2) Tuesday night at Jesse
Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. It is just the sixth
victory for Ohio State in the series as Akron holds a 21-6-1 record
against the Buckeyes.
Ohio State took a 1-0 lead at 69:59 when Taylor Korpieski blasted a
shot from 20 yards out into the upper right. To that point, the
Zips had controlled the run of play in the second half with
Korpieski's goal serving as the Buckeyes' first shot of the
period.
Akron nearly tied it up in the 80th minute on a header from
Sinisa Ubiparipovic
(Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/UIC) inches from the goal line, but the shot
went just wide. It is the first time since the 2004 season that the
Zips have been held scoreless in back-to-back matches.
Akron played a man down for the final five minutes when
Matt Augustin (Silver Lake,
Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) was shown a red card. He will now have to sit
out Friday's contest against Western Michigan.
Matt Tutich (Westmont,
Ill./Hinsdale Central) was in prime position to put Akron up with a
1-on-1 against OSU goalkeeper Casey Latchem at 51:30, but Latchem
was able to make the save, pushing the ball over the endline for a
corner kick. The Zips threatened again when Ubiparipovic headed a
serve from
Jonathan McClain (Huber
Heights, Ohio/Wayne/Wright State), but Latchem made the save,
barely stopping his momentum from carrying the ball into the
net.
A few minutes later, the Zips were back in front of the Buckeyes
goal, but
Geir Nyheim (Bergen,
Norway/U.Pihl) sent his header high.
The Zips looked to strike early as
Elliot Bradbrook (Kent,
England/Leigh City Technology/Ashland) took a shot from 12 yards
out in the fourth minute, but Latchem was able to get a hand on it
and punch it over for the save. The Buckeyes came back with a
dangerous look in the 17th minute as Eric Brunner connected on a
header off a set piece, but
Evan Bush (Concord,
Ohio/Lake Catholic) made a diving save to his left.
Ohio State was credited with 11 shots to Akron's one in the first
half as Bush collected four saves. Bush did not record a save in
the second half, tying his season high with four.
Freshman
Ben
Zemanski (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) made
his first career start against the Buckeyes
Akron resumes MAC play this weekend as it plays host to Western
Michigan Friday night at Lee Jackson Field. The Zips and Broncos
will hit the pitch at 5 p.m. for the first part of a doubleheader
with the Akron women's team.
