Akron Zips Summer Baseball Player Update

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron baseball team concluded its season back on May 20, however many individuals will be playing in various summer baseball leagues, including the nation's premier amateur baseball summer league, the Cape Cod League.
Tom Farmer (Berea, Ohio/Berea) was selected to play for the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League (wood bat league). In his first start for the Braves, Farmer went six innings allowing no runs on just one hit. He did walk five, but struck out four in the no-decision.
Farmer left the game with a 2-0 lead, but the bullpen gave up five runs in the eighth to Wareham and another in the ninth to fall 6-2. In the recent Major League Baseball Player Draft, 175 former Cape Cod League players that played in 2003, 2004 and/or 2005 were taken, including 12 first round selections.
Ross Liersemann (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington), who was a player that was selected in the 18th round of the MLB Player Draft by the Florida Marlins, has been assigned to the Jamestown Jammers of the New York-Penn League (Class-A Short Season). The Jammers open their season tonight at home against the Cleveland Indians Class-A team, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Liersemann is not scheduled to pitch.
In other action, Charlie Lenhard (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) is off to a hot start in the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League (wood bat league) as a member of the Silver Spring-Takoma (Md.) Thunderbolts (4-5), who are winners of four of their last five.
Lenhard hit two home runs in the eighth inning of a night game
on June 13 at the University of Maryland's Shipley Field as his
team defeated the College Park Bombers, 19-2. Lenhard was 4-for-6
in the game with a single and double to go with his two home runs.
He is currently batting .292 over six games, which ranks second on
his team and 14th in the league. He has two doubles, two home runs,
five runs scored and five more driven in on the season.
Doug McNulty (Homer City, Pa./Homer-Center), who is playing for the Delaware (Ohio) Cows of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate Baseball League (wood bat league), has made five starts at first base in the team's first 10 games. However, at the plate he is off to a slow start batting only .118 (2-17). He has a double, a run scored and an RBI on the season and in the field has made 40 put-outs without an error.
McNulty's team is 4-6 on the season, but recently ended its five-game losing streak defeating Lima on June 18. They return to action tonight against Southern Ohio.
