Harvey Named Freshman All-American
December 08 | Football
AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron freshman wide
receiver
David Harvey (Penn Hills,
Pa./Penn Hills) was recognized by The Sporting News for
his outstanding rookie campaign, earning first-team Freshman
All-America honors as a kick returner, and an honorable mention
designation as a wide receiver.
He is the second Akron player to be honored by the magazine in as
many seasons as linebacker
Kevin Grant (Herndon,
Va./Herndon) was a third-team selection in 2005.
Harvey appeared in all 12 games, hauling in 43 receptions for 914
yards, an average of 21.3 yards per catch. That number currently
ranks third nationally and first among freshmen. He is also tops
nationally among rookies in yards per game at 76.2. Harvey set a
new freshman record at Akron with 10 touchdown receptions, and was
one off the school record of 11 set by Dan Ruff in 1968.
A dual threat, Harvey also electrified crowds with his kick-return
abilities. On his first-ever kick return, he ran the ball back 78
yards vs. North Texas on Sept. 23, setting up an Akron touchdown.
His second return in the game went for 79 yards, setting up another
Akron score in a 33-13 win. Harvey finished the year with 17
returns for 510 yards, an average of 30 yards per return which
ranks third in the nation.
In addition to The Sporting News, Rivals.com also honored
Harvey as a first-team Freshman All-American. Last month Harvey was
named to the All-Mid-American Conference second team.
Freshman punter John Stec (Delray Beach, Fla./Atlantic) also earned honorable mention designation from The Sporting News. Stec punted 60 times for 2,318 yards, an average of 38.6 yards per kick.
