Track And Field Inks Four For 2007-08
December 22 | Track & Field
- The University of Akron track and field team added four
additions to the program for the 2007-08 season head coach Dennis
Mitchell announced on Wednesday.
Cassandra Schenck comes to Akron via Mantua, Ohio and
hopes to bolster the Zips in distance events and on the cross
country terrain. The Crestwood High School standout was a key
member of the school's 2006 Division II state champion team running
the leadoff leg of the victorious 4x 800m relay as well as placing
second in the 1600m and 3200m races. She also placed second at the
2006 Division II cross country meet and in the prestigious Penn
Relays 3000m, where she ran a personal best time of 9:45.59.
Local native Ashley Kaltwasser was the second
fastest hurdler in the state of Ohio in 2006. The Conventry High
School star ran the 300m hurdlers in 43.63 seconds and flew through
the 100m hurdlers in 14.7 seconds in 2006. She also earned All-Ohio
accolades in cross country this past season.
Kenny Owens is another local product that will look to
continue the great tradition of Akron pole vaulting starting in
2007-08. The Wadsworth High School leaper placed sixth at the 2006
Division I OHSAA Meet with a personal best mark of 14' 6''.
Javelin thrower Nick Erdesky comes to the Zips
from Hermitage, Pa., and Hickory High School. He was the PA
District 10 Champion with a personal best, school and district
record throw of 192' 10". That mark broke future teammate Auston
Papay's District 10 record of 190', which he accomplished in 2004.
Erdesky is a well-rounded athlete at 6' 4" and 200 lbs., as he also
played quarterback and basketball at Hickory.
The Zips will get their 2007 indoor season underway on Friday, Jan.
12, when they host the Akron Quad Meet in the Athletics Field
House.
