December 01 | Men's Soccer
The postseason honors continue for the University of Akron men's
soccer team as seniors Sinisa Ubiparpovic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/UIC)
and
Jonathan McClain (Huber
Heights, Ohio/Wayne/Wright State) were named to the NSCAA All-Great
Lakes Region teams announced Thursday.
Named to the first team, the 2006 Mid-American Conference Player
of the Year, Ubiparipovic recorded seven goals and seven assists on
the season for a team-high 21 points. The 2005 National Soccer
Coaches Association of America All-American produced three
game-winning scores for Akron, including the deciding goal in a 2-1
win over Buffalo that gave Akron a share of the MAC regular season
title.
"Jon and Sinisa were tremendous this year and it is nice that they
are being recognized for their efforts," said Akron head coach
Caleb Porter.
In three seasons at Akron, Ubiparipovic tallied 34 goals,
including a career-high 17 in 2005 as Akron advanced to the
quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. A two-time first-team All-MAC
selection, he played in 81 career games with the Zips, making 69
starts. Earlier this week it was announced that Ubiparipovic has
been selected to participate in the 2007 Major League Soccer Player
Combine in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. on Jan. 5-8.
A third-team selection, McClain was a first-team All-MAC honoree
this season and was a catalyst for the Zips' offensive attack from
his left back spot, recording five assists in 19 starts. A
second-team All-MAC pick in 2005, McClain also contributed to Akron
athletics as a place kicker on the UA football time while also
competing in soccer.
The Zips concluded the 2006 season with a 13-5-1 record and
recorded a share of their ninth regular-season MAC title.
