November 16 | Men's Soccer
AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron men's soccer standouts Steve
Kalan (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) and Geir Nyheim (Bergen,
Norway/U.Pihl) were two of 11 players named to the Academic All-MAC
squad announced by the league office today.
It is the second-consecutive season that Kalan has been named to
the academic squad. The junior midfielder had a breakout season in
2006, starting all 19 games. He totaled 14 points with five goals
and four assists, including a three-goal performance in a 4-0 win
over UNC Greensboro on Oct. 24 that netted him MAC Player of the
Week honors, as well as recognition from Soccer America and College
Soccer News. Kalan is majoring in mechanical engineering with a
3.45 GPA.
"I am very proud of the academic accomplishments of these two
young men," said head coach Caleb Porter. "They serve as great
ambassadors for the University of Akron and the student athletes
our soccer program hopes to produce year in and year out."
Nyheim appeared in 15 games in 2006, making five starts. The
sophomore forward recorded 12 shots on the season. An international
business major, Nyheim sports a 4.0 GPA.
The Zips finished the season with a 13-5-1 record and earned a
share of the MAC regular season title. Akron will return eight
starters for the 2007 season.
