The University of Akron Athletics
Akron, Penn State Play to 0-0 Double Overtime Tie
October 06 | Men's Soccer
The University of Akron men's soccer team put forth another
solid defensive effort but could not break through in the offensive
third in a 0-0 double overtime tie at Penn State's Jeffrey Field
Friday night. Akron is now 7-3-1 on the season, while the Nittany
Lions are 3-7-2.
The Zips finished with 14 shots in the game, but only three of
those counted as on-goal looks. Midfielder
Ashley Kozicki
(Kresgeville, Pa./Pleasant Valley/St. John's) came in off the bench
in the 24th minute and immediately tested PSU goalkeeper Conrad
Taylor, putting a shot on frame at 23:59 and forcing Taylor to make
the save.
Sinisa Ubiparipovic
(Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/UIC) saw one of his game-high five attempts
sail high on a header at 32:46, but he came back with a shot at
55:37 that challenged Taylor with a save. Kozicki finished with two
shots, along with two each from
Pablo Moreira (Broadview
Heights, Ohio/Brecksville) and
Matt Tutich (Westmont,
Ill./Hinsdale Central).
Akron continued to pressure the Penn State defense, tallying six
corner kicks, but were also a bit too anxious in their attack with
six offsides calls. One of those flags went up with just under two
minutes remaining in the second overtime as the Zips continued to
battle for a result.
The Zips' best scoring opportunity in the overtime periods came at
107:02 when Tutich had a look that was saved by Conrad.
In addition to the three saves by Taylor, Akron also had three of
its shot attempts blocked by a scrambling Penn State defense.
Akron goalkeeper
Evan Bush (Concord,
Ohio/Lake Catholic) totaled three saves in the game, picking up his
sixth shutout of the season and 20th of his career. The Zips' back
line of
Ossie Michalsen (Bergen,
Norway/Soccer Academy of Danielsen),
Jonathan McClain (Huber
Heights, Ohio/Wayne/Wright State),
Devin McKenney (North
Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted/Dayton) and
Andrew Tipton (Uniontown,
Ohio/Lake) had another stellar performance in helping to keep the
Nittany Lions out of the net.
The Zips return home on Tuesday night for a nonconference match
against the Wright State Raiders. Game time is 7:30 p.m. EDT.
