Zips Cruise Past Bowling Green, 4-1
October 20 | Men's Soccer
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Four different Zips found
the back of the net in the first half as the Zips ran away with a
4-1 victory over Bowling Green at Mickey Cochrane Field Friday
afternoon.
Akron improves top 10-4-1, 3-1 in MAC play. Bowling Green falls to
3-11-1, 0-3 MAC.
" We did everything right in the first half," said Akron head
coach
Caleb Porter. "We wanted to
defend well and make it difficult for them to get through. I
thought this was our best half of attacking soccer all year. We got
behind them and took our chances well."
Akron wasted little time getting on the board as
Steve Kalan (Highland
Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) recorded his second goal of the season at
6:50. Carrying the ball up the middle of the field,
Pablo Moreira (Broadview
Heights, Ohio/Brecksville) dished off to Kalan who was making a run
up the right side and slotted the ball to the far post for the
score.
It was freshman
Rostand Erlichman
(Scottsdale, Ariz./Chapparal) who set up the Zips' second goal at
31:29. Working his way through the Bowling Green defense, Erlichman
took an on-goal shot that was saved by BGSU goalkeeper Paul
Shoemaker, but Moreira raced in to put home the rebound for his
fourth goal of the season.
Freshman
Ben
Zemanski (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) got in
on the scoring act with his first career goal at 38:31. In the
scramble off a corner kick, the ball was played back out to
Jonathan McClain (Huber
Heights, Ohio/Wayne/Wright State) who passed off to Zemanski.
Zemanski rifled a shot from 20 yards out into the upper right to
give Akron a 3-0 lead.
The Zips quickly made it 4-0 at 43:50 when
Matt Tutich (Westmont,
Ill./Hinsdale Central) took a ball from
Vedran Ilic (Belvidere,
Ohio/Guilford) and after the goalkeeper missed on a diving attempt,
rolled the ball into the far post for goal number three on the
season.
The game started out at a fast pace with the Zips taking four shots
in the first 10 minutes, including two on-goal looks. Akron took
seven shots on in the first half, all of which were on goal.
Bowling Green had one shot attempt in the first 45 minutes of
action.
Bowling Green's first real threat of the match was turned away by
Akron goalkeeper
Evan Bush (Concord,
Ohio/Lake Catholic) as Bush blocked what would have been a sure
goal on Justin Kim's shot. Bush recorded five saves on the
afternoon, four of which came in the second half.
Bowling Green played short-handed for the final 22:55 of the match
after 7 was sent off with a red card after a late tackle from
behind on Tutich. That didn't prevent the Falcons from putting one
in the net at 79:21 off the foot George Davis.
Porter took full advantage of his bench with
Ryan Hathcock (Auburn,
Ala./Auburn/UAB),
Andrew Tipton (Uniontown,
Ohio/Lake),
Geir Nyheim (Bergen,
Norway/U.Pihl) and
C.J. Kaufman (Tucson,
Ariz./Salpoint Catholic) seeing action along with Ilic and
Erlichman
Akron returns home for its final nonconference game of the regular
season as it plays host to UNC Greensboro Tuesday night at Lee
Jackson Field. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
