PRINCETON, N.J. -- - Freshman Matthew Tutich (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) found the back of the net with just a little over two minutes left in regulation as the No. 9 Akron Zips improved to a perfect 6-0 with a 1-0 win over Princeton Sunday afternoon at the Princeton Invitational.
It was an even battle through the first half as each team collected six shot attempts. Freshman Geir Nyheim (Bergen, Norway/U.Pihl) led Akron with four shots, three of which were on-goal. The Zips were unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities, including a one-on-one situation and an offsides call on a goal.
Just as it looked like the game would head into overtime, Ross McKenzie (Whangamata, New Zealand/Mount Albert) guided a pass through the box to Tutich, who knocked his shot off the crossbar and past Princeton goalkeeper Bobby Guelich for the game-winner.
"Princeton put forth a spirited effort and competed really hard," said UA head coach Ken Lolla. "But even on a day when we did not play at our best we still found a way to win."
Goalkeeper Evan Bush (Concord, Ohio/Lake Catholic) recorded his third shutout of the season, making three saves. Although the Tigers held a slim 11-10 advantage in shots taken, the Zips had seven shots on-goal to Princeton's three.
Akron is off to its best start since the 1984 season when it
opened with a 7-0-2 mark and went on to a 15-2-3 finish and NCAA
Tournament appearance.
