AKRON, Ohio - Freshman forward Geir Nyheim (Bergen, Norway/U.Pihl) added two goals to his team-leading total and Akron (4-0) collected its third shutout of the young season as the ninth-ranked men's soccer team posted a 2-0 win at Wright State (1-3) Sunday afternoon.
As the game approached the half in a scoreless deadlock, Nyheim connected on what would prove to be the game-winning score at 40:45. Andrew Tipton (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) connected with Nyheim on a long serve, and the freshman broke away with a shot to the left post.
"We got out to kind of a slow start today, but once we got going we put a lot of pressure on them and wore them down, resulting in two good goals," said Akron head coach Ken Lolla.
The Zips clung to a 1-0 lead until Nyheim added an insurance score in the 77th minute. Nyheim collected a cross from the right side and blasted a shot into the left-hand corner of the net for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Sinisa Ubiparipovic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and Brendan Murphy (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) picked up an assist on the goal. In two games this weekend, Nyheim tallied five goals with three scores coming in Akron's 12-2 rout of Cleveland State Friday night.
Freshman goalkeeper Evan Bush (Concord, Ohio/Lake Catholic) collected his fourth win of the season, making a season-high five saves in 90 minutes of action.
"It was another solid effort by our defense and we limited their
chances," Lolla said. "This is a good road win."
