AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron swimming and diving team (4-3, 1-3 MAC) won two of the last three events to finish in second place after the final day of the 2005 SummaCare Invitational Sunday at the Ocasek Natatorium in Akron, Ohio.
Illinois State won the women's team title with a total of 1,588 points while the Zips finished with 1,298 points to edge Clarion (1,275 points) for second. On the men's side, St. Bonaventure swam away with the men's title with a total of 1,630.5 points while Xavier finished second with 1,421 points.
Day three saw the fewest amount of records broken on the weekend, as Melissa Young (North Canton, Ohio-West Chester University (Pa.)), Danielle Béland (Ottawa, Ontario-St. Peters) were the only competitors to set new marks on the day.
Young's school-record performance in the 200 breaststroke proved to be one of the most important swims of the day. Her second-place finish in a time of 2:22.98 moved the Zips into second place in the team standings.
Béland helped solidify Akron's standings with a win in the 200 butterfly, posting a meet and pool-record time of 2:01.35. On the weekend, Béland collected three individual and two relay victories and broke 11 total records in seven events.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Lauren Wichert (), Béland, Megan Walters (Columbus, Ind.-Columbus North) and Ali Allwes (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe Falls) capped off the event with a second-place finish in a time of 3:31.60.
The Zips will take the holiday season off and will return to
action when they host Youngstown State on January 14 for Senior
