Akron's win was its first in a season opener since the 2001-02 season (Nov. 17) when it defeating Iona 67-64 on the road.
Akron improved its all-time record in lidlifters to 63-42, including a 53-11 mark when opening at home.
UA now leads the all-time series over YSU 52-31, and has won 14 of the last 15 square offs. The Penguins win in that stretch came in the previous meeting, a 69-53 on Dec. 10, 1994 in Youngstown.
Akron trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half, down 28-11 with 8:21 before the intermission, and was behind by as many as 15 points (50-35) with 13 minutes to go in regulation.
In the final 13 minutes of the contest, Akron outscored Youngstown State 32-12 for the victory. After allowing 38 YSU points in the first half, the Zips held the Penguins to just 24 points in the second period and owned a 40-24 scoring margin after halftime.
The Zips shot just 30.3 percent (10 of 33) from the field in the first half, but doubled that number in the second period (60.7 percent/17 of 28). UA shot 44.3 percent (27 of 61) from the floor for the game.
Player Notes:
Romeo Travis scored a career and game-high 25 points,
with 16 of those coming in the second half. He ended the night 12
of 17 (70.6 percent) from the floor, and posted an 8 of 9
field-goal shooting clip after the break. Travis' previous
career-high of 23 points came last season against Eastern Michigan
(March 5).

In his first game in a Zips uniform, Nick Dials scored 13 points and added a team-best and career-high tying five assists. He also logged 28 minutes of action after having surgery to repair a torn left ACL in June. A redshirt-sophomore, Dials sat out last season after transferring from Ohio State.
Matt Futch pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds in just 20 minutes of work. That mark was one off his career-best.
