Box Score
AKRON, Ohio -- - Sinisa Ubiparipovic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/UIC) and Ross McKenzie (Whangamata, New Zealand/Mount Albert) have been the offensive leaders for the top-ranked Akron men's soccer team this season, so it was only fitting that the two combined for the game-winning score as the Zips defeated Michigan (8-7-1), 1-0 Friday night at Lee Jackson Field.
The Zips improved to 15-0-1 on the year, with two regular-season matches remaining.
After a scoreless 90 minutes of play, the Zips converted on their 15th shot of the day as McKenzie crossed the ball into Ubiparipovic, who positioned himself in front of the net and fired a shot past U-M keeper Peter Dzubay for the game-winning score at 94:29. It was Ubiparipovic's 12th goal of the season and his team-leading fifth game winner.
"I thought our guys played great and thoroughly deserved to win," Akron head coach Ken Lolla said. "We dominated large portions of the game and (Michigan goalkeeper) Peter Dzubay had an excellent game. We were finally able to break through."
Akron had its chances to take the lead in the first half, including a score by McKenzie in the early minutes that was waved off due to an offsides call. McKenzie would be forced to leave the game with 13:58 left in the first half after receiving a blow to the nose, but was able to return in the second half.
Steve Kalan (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) had an open angle
on the net at 50:43, but his shot ran wide. Amico DiFranco
(Chesterland, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) led the Zips'
offensive attack with five shots, including one right at Dzubay
with just over 15 minutes remaining.

Akron held a 15-7 advantage in shots taken, with seven of the Zips' shots on-goal. The Zips did not allow the Wolverines to take a shot in the overtime period, and also finished with six corner kicks compared to four by U-M.
The Zips nearly had a score in the 81st minute when a diving Dzubay got his hand on Justin Sadler's (Boiling Springs, Pa./Cumberland Valley/Drexel) shot which was heading toward the back of the net.
Akron goalkeeper Evan Bush (Concord, Ohio/Lake Catholic) recorded four saves en route to his 10th shutout of the season. The Zips' defensive line of Ossie Michalsen (Bergen, Norway/Soccer Academy of Danielsen), Matt Augustin (Silver Lake, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Jonathan McClain (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne/Wright State) continues to shine, having allowed just one goal in the second half of play this season.
The Zips close out the home portion of the 2005 regular season on Sunday as they play host to Kentucky (6-6-5). Prior to the start of the game, the Zips will honor seniors McKenzie, DiFranco, Sadler, Dino Campellone, Jeremy Field, Yohann Mauger and Paul LaGuardia.
