Tennis Wraps Up Fall Invite With Strong Showing

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron women's tennis team closed out its Fall Invite with three doubles victories and five wins in singles play Saturday at Hyre Park. Detroit, Duquesne, Youngstown State and University of Indianapolis competed in the event, which was not team scored.
UA's doubles wins came by way of the duo of Kerry Langworthy (Harare, Zimbabwe/Gateway) and Tanya Gombera (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School) over Detroit's Annie Moore and Ashley Cummins 8-5, the pair of Amy Sherlock (Halifax, Nova Scotia/Sacred Heart) and Jenna Larson (Bismarck, N.D./Century) over Detroit's Aneta Maricevic and Kaitlin McVehil 8-4, and the team of Lindsey Berry (Dayton, Ohio/Northmont) and Alyssa Carlson (Rockford, Ill./Lutheran) over Detroit's Kelly Davis and Rachel Merritt 8-4.
In singles, Gombera bested Maricevic 6-1, 6-2; Sherlock defeated McVehil 6-1, 6-0; Carlson downed Davis 6-1, 6-0; Larson bested Detroit's Stephanie Hill 7-6, 6-2 and UA's Jennifer Ales (Spring Hill, Fla./Pasco-Hernando CC [Fla.]/Central) scored an 8-5 exhibition win over Merritt.
Akron travels to New York City next weekend to take part in the Fordham Invite. The Zips face Fordham and Long Island on Friday, and St. John's on Saturday.
