No. 1 Akron, No. 4 St. John's play to 2-2 Double Overtime Tie

QUEENS, N.Y. -- - Battling tough playing conditions with a driving rain and soggy field, the top-ranked University of Akron men's soccer team (11-0-1) battled No. 4 St. John's (7-1-4), to a 2-2 double overtime tie Wednesday night on a windy, rain-soaked Belson Field pitch.
The two goals allowed by freshman goalkeeper Evan Bush (Concord, Ohio/Lake Catholic) tied a season high, as Cleveland State put two in the net in a 12-2 loss to the Zips. Akron's two goals scored ties a season high for scores allowed by the Red Storm.
The Red Storm took the 1-0 lead when Lewis rifled a shot in from 10 yards out at 3:33. Akron tied things up at 24:24 when Matthew Tutich (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) collected a pass in front of the net from Steve Kalan (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) on the right side and took advantage of an open net for his fifth goal of the season.
St. John's led 2-1 at the half, thanks to a wind-aided shot from Andre Schmid from 30 yards out at 34:06. It was the first time this season Akron trailed at the halftime break.
The Zips had the advantage of the wind to their back in the second half of play, but were unable to put together a threat until the end of the period.
With time winding down in the second half, Sinisa Ubiparipovic
(Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/UIC) tied the game up at 2-all with his 10th
goal of the season. At 80:59, Amico DiFranco (Chesterland,
Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) rolled a short pass into
Ubiparipovic who fired a shot from his right side. Akron held a
12-10 advantage in shots taken after regulation, with five of those
attempts on goal.

The Zips outshot St. John's 4-2 in the first overtime period had two good chances with Tutich's shot blocked by Ben Shuleva, and Ross McKenzie (Whangamata, New Zealand/Mount Albert) sending his attempt just wide of the net.
In the second overtime, a kick out by Dino Campellone (Seven Hills, Ohio/St. Ignatius) prevented a game-winning score from Danny Dragoi .Garry Lewis had a shot that was just wide with 3:24 left in the game.
Akron finished with a 21-15 advantage in shots taken, led by six from Jonathan McClain (Huber Heights, Ohio/Huber Heights/Wright State), and four each from McKenzie and Ubiparipovic.
Akron returns home to take Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Lee Jackson Field. The game is part of a doubleheader with the UA women who face Ball State at 1 p.m.
