Junior linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III (Ocala, Fla.) was tabbed the Zips’ Summa Health Student-Athlete of the Week on October 16.
In Akron’s 14-13 win at defending MAC champion Western Michigan, Gilbert had 10 tackles and a two-yard sack to end the game and seal the Zips’ third consecutive victory. The Zips opened the MAC slate with a 3-0 record for the first time since the 2000 season. Akron is the only undefeated team in the MAC East (conference games).
In seven games, Gilbert is the Zips’ defensive leader with 68 tackles, four sacks, two break-ups, and an interception.
The Summa Health Student-Athlete of the Week is Gilbert’s second this fall. He also earned the honor on Sept. 11.
