Former Akron All-American high jumper Tomasz Smialek is in his 13th campaign as a full-time assistant coach on the Zips' staff and 14th season overall. Smialek, a 2006 graduate from Akron, coaches the high jumpers and the horizontal jumpers, while assisting with the day-to-day duties in the track office.

Smialek has overseen the development of 13 All-Americans to 27 All-America citations – including Brittany Cheese (Long Jump - 2013 Outdoor), Hesham Eldesouky (Triple Jump - 2019 Indoor), Collister Fahie (Long Jump - 2011 Outdoor), Claudia Garcia Jou (High Jump - 2016 Outdoor, 2016 Indoor, 2015 Outdoor, 2015 Indoor), Weronika Gaudyn (Triple Jump - 2014 Indoor), Cadeau Kelley (Long Jump - 2008 Outdoor), Jordan Latimer (Long Jump - 2019 Outdoor, 2019 Indoor, 2018 Outdoor, 2018 Indoor, 2015 Outdoor, 2015 Indoor), Nikki Manson (High Jump - 2017 Outdoor, 2017 Indoor), Terrell McClain (Long Jump - 2018 Outdoor, 2017 Outdoor, 2017 Indoor, 2016 Outdoor), Joe Oduho (Long Jump - 2016 Outdoor), Curtis Richardson (High Jump - 2019 Outdoor, 2016 Outdoor), Natalie Sako (High Jump - 2007 Indoor) and Cody Stine (High Jump - 2017 Outdoor, 2016 Outdoor) – while his student-athletes have captured 56 individual MAC Championships since 2007.

Entering the 2020 campaign, seven of Smialek's protégés own 10 combined indoor/outdoor Akron Track and Field school records. That list includes; Claudia Garcia Jou (Indoor and Outdoor Women's High Jump), Weronika Gaudyn (Indoor Women's Triple Jump), Hesham Eldesouky (Indoor and Outdoor Men's Triple Jump), Daniella Johnson (Indoor and Outdoor Women's Long Jump) Jordan Latimer (Indoor Men's Long Jump), Terrell McClain (Outdoor Men's Long Jump) and Ariadna Ramos Gandia (Outdoor Women's Triple Jump), while Smialek himself owns the top indoor and outdoor men's marks in the high jump.

Garcia Jou owns the MAC indoor and outdoor women's high jump conference records, as well as holding the top all-time mark at the outdoor MAC Championships.

Smialek has mentored three national record holders in a long jump (Cadeau Kelley-Liberian National Record at 8.00m., Liberian Indoor NR at 7.87m.; Collister Fahie-U.S. Virgin Islands NR at 7.91m; Hesham Eldesouky-Egyptian Indoor Triple Jump NR – 16.00m).

Smialek has twice been named the USTFCCCA Great Lakes Regional Men's Assistant Coach of the Year in 2016 and 2019.

Smialek completed his collegiate career as one of the best high jumpers to ever compete at Akron. He is the current school record holder in both indoor and outdoor competition, clearing 7-03.25 indoors and 7-03.75 outdoors.

He ended his collegiate career on a high note, earning his second All-American honor at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Championship, finishing eighth after clearing a season-best 7-02.25. His first All-American honor came at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championship in which he placed sixth with a jump of 7-02.50.

Smialek is also a six-time MAC Champion in high jump and was named 2005 UA Indoor Most Valuable Performer.

He garnered multiple gold and silver medals at Junior and Senior Polish National Championship as a member of the Junior and Senior Polish National Team (1998-2001). Additionally, he earned a bronze medal at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Santiago de Chile (2000).

Smialek was selected to Polish Olympic Training Squad for Athens Olympics in 2004, U-23 European Championship Finalist – Amsterdam in 2001 and was the Penn Relays champion in the high jump in 2006.
9-19
